Shah Jahan in Durbar — full restored artwork
The story on your wall

The emperor appears like a painting within the painting.

Every morning, the Mughal emperor showed himself to his court from the jharokha — a raised marble balcony that framed him like a portrait. In this seventeenth-century durbar scene, the painter makes that ritual the whole design: Shah Jahan sits haloed at the centre, princes stand on the dais beneath him, and the hall descends rank by rank to the carpet.

Look at the lower half: rows of nobles with black-lacquer shields, each robe patterned differently, standing on a midnight-dark floral carpet. The white marble above, the dark carpet below — the painting holds a whole empire in one balanced breath.

The court scene that turns a wall into a throne room.
