Iskandar at the Lion’s Mouth Whirlpool — from a Khamsa of Nizami painted at Herat, late fifteenth century, in the circle of Bihzad.

Iskandar — Alexander the Great as Persian legend remade him — appears in the Khamsa as philosopher-king, explorer and seeker of wisdom.

This painting comes from a famous Khamsa (Quintet) of Nizami produced at Herat in the 1490s, associated with the master Kamal al-Din Bihzad and his circle. The Herat school is prized for its measured compositions, luminous architecture and acutely observed human figures.
