An Aged Pilgrim by Abu'l Hasan | Restored Mughal Wall Art

A frail old pilgrim — barefoot, leaning on a wooden staff, wrapped in a soft pearl-grey cloak — emerges from a deep emerald-green ground inside a small jewelled niche. Around him, the folio explodes into shimmering blue-and-gold arabesque: lapis floral cartouches, tiny gold-on-blue blossoms, looping vines that climb to fill the whole page.

Painted by Abu'l Hasan, c. 1618-20 — the painter Jahangir most prized, on whom he bestowed the title Nadir az-Zaman ("Wonder of the Age"). The pilgrim's quiet dignity — every wrinkle and seam attended to — is the disciplined Mughal portrait tradition Abu'l Hasan refined into something almost meditative.
