A vast, swirling battle scene from a late-sixteenth-century imperial Mughal manuscript: cavalry and footsoldiers clash beneath a sky thick with dust, banners snapping, arrows in flight, fallen horses, the field a chaos of crimson and steel. The composition spills across the folio in the dynamic, multi-figured manner Akbar's master painters perfected for the great illustrated epics produced in his imperial workshops.

An imperial Mughal manuscript folio, ca. 1580–1600. Restored from the museum archives by Aurah Living.
