Ardashir Captures Ardavan — from the Great Mongol Shahnama, painted at Tabriz under the Ilkhanid court, c. 1330–1340.

This folio belongs to the Great Mongol Shahnama — long known as the Demotte Shahnama — the most ambitious illustrated Book of Kings of the Ilkhanid period, made at Tabriz in the 1330s. Its paintings are unusually large and dramatic for Persian manuscript art, and they absorb the Chinese landscape conventions that travelled west along the Mongol trade routes. The manuscript was broken up in the early twentieth century and its surviving folios are now scattered across collections worldwide.
