Buti — Mughal Sprig Print Wide-Leg Trousers

The small flowering sprig, the buti, is the quiet signature of the Mughal court wardrobe: scattered in neat staggered rows across a prince's jama, a single motif repeated until it becomes a texture.

We printed it onto a relaxed cotton trouser in three court colourways, each drawn from a painted robe:

• Saffron: wine-dark sprigs on saffron gold, from Emperor Jahangir's portrait jama, with a burgundy waistband.
• Violet: gold sprigs on deep violet, after Jahangir's violet darbar robe, finished with a fine gold rule at the hem.
• Ivory: tone-on-tone sprigs on ivory, as worn by princes and nobles in Mughal court portraits, with a red lozenge border at the hem like the end of a patka sash.

Wear them with the matching knit cardigans, or with a plain white shirt and let the print do the talking.

• All-over print: the design is printed onto the cotton, then cut and sewn, so the pattern runs from waistband to hem
• 95% cotton, 5% elastane, 8.85 oz./yd.² (300 g/m²): a heavyweight cotton with a little stretch and a medium-soft feel
• Relaxed wide leg with an elastic, adjustable waistband and side pockets
• Unisex sizing, 2XS–6XL
• Made to order; blank product components sourced from Mexico

Care

• Wash cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle; do not bleach
• Tumble dry low or hang dry; do not iron directly on the print
• Printed cotton has a soft matte finish, so colours read slightly more muted than on screen
