Caesar Captive before Shapur II, Attributed to Aqa Mirak | Restored Persian Miniature

Caesar Captive before Shapur II — attributed to the court painter Aqa Mirak, from the celebrated Shahnama (Book of Kings) commissioned by Shah Tahmasp I, painted in Tabriz in the 1520s–1530s.

This folio comes from the most celebrated illustrated manuscript in Persian art — the monumental Shahnama (Book of Kings) of Firdausi created for the Safavid ruler Shah Tahmasp I. Produced in the royal workshops of Tabriz in the second quarter of the sixteenth century, the manuscript brought together the greatest painters of the age, among them Sultan Muhammad, Mir Musavvir and Aqa Mirak. Its pages are renowned for jewel-like colour, gold-flecked skies and compositions that spill beyond their rulings.

Meticulously restored in exquisite detail and printed as a museum-quality matted framed poster on enhanced matte art paper, or as a fine art paper print. Each piece is produced to order.
