The story behind it
Attributed to Govardhan and painted around 1615–20 at the height of Mughal court art. Jahangir married the widow Mehr-un-Nissa in 1611 and renamed her Nur Jahan, "Light of the World"; as the emperor turned to hunting, wine and his painters, she became the real power behind the throne, and coins were struck in her name. Look for the two pearls in his ear — worn from 1614 in thanks to a saint he believed had healed him — the pair of birds overhead, the cypress trees (in Persian poetry, the beloved), and the couple's matching red-and-gold slippers. Carefully restored by Aurah Living and reprinted for the wall.
