Jamawar Silk Scarf in Chocolate

Four great paisleys turn slowly around a golden rosette.

Jamawar takes its name from the most prized shawls of the Mughal court, woven in Kashmir, worn by the emperors and presented as gifts of honour. At their heart was the buta, a flowering bud that curls into the teardrop the world now calls paisley.

This scarf gathers four of them, each filled with peonies and blossoms in garnet, plum and gold, on a deep chocolate ground of tiny flowers. A cream border of miniature butas frames it all, the way the hashia, the border, frames a Kashmir shawl.

Knotted at the neck or tied as a headscarf, every fold brings a different paisley to the front.

The silk

• 100% silk satin, 85 gsm: a lightweight satin weave with a soft sheen and fluid drape
• Printed edge to edge on one side with reactive inks certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. As with all fine printed silk, the design shows softly through on the reverse
• Printed, cut and hemmed in London

Size

• 90 × 90 cm (35.4 × 35.4 in), the classic carré size
• The hem takes up a little of the fabric, so the finished scarf measures about 88–89 cm (34.6–35 in) on each side

Choose your hem

• Classic hem: a baby hem. The edge is folded over twice and finished with a fine top stitch in black thread
• Hand-Rolled hem: the edge is rolled by hand into a slim, rounded hem and stitched in black thread. As with any handwork, the edge may be very slightly irregular
