About the piece Scroll ↓

In a moonlit mountain pass, two lovers ride side by side—Sultan Baz Bahadur of Malwa and his beloved Rupmati, their horses advancing through rocky terrain as attendants follow behind. Dating to the mid-to-late 18th century, this painting depicts one of India's most poignant romances: the Muslim ruler who was captivated by the melodious voice of a Hindu shepherdess, and their brief, blazing love that ended on the battlefield. The composition captures the couple in an intimate moment of the hunt, Baz Bahadur likely carrying a falcon, their gazes locked in devotion, framed by dramatic cliffs under a luminous night sky.

Their story became legend after Akbar's general Adham Khan defeated Baz Bahadur in 1561—Rupmati chose poison over capture, while her lover eventually surrendered to the Mughal court, where he became renowned as a singer. As imperial power waned after Nadir Shah's 1739 sack of Delhi, artists at provincial courts and the Punjab Hills turned to such idealized scenes of past glory and tragic romance. This painting, with its elaborate floral borders and jewel-toned pigments, reflects that yearning—art as solace in an age of political upheaval.

This painting is part of Aurah Living's restored Mughal collection — digitally cleaned and color-corrected from archival sources, with the folio's painted inset, decorative hashiya, and original paper margins preserved.

Premium matte paper print, framed in solid wood with a beveled cream mat. Three frame finishes: Black, Red Oak, White. Free U.S. shipping in the continental United States.
