In this celebrated episode from the romance of Layla and Majnun, Majnun’s father brings his son on pilgrimage to the Kaaba, hoping he will pray to be freed of his consuming love for Layla — instead, Majnun grips the sanctuary’s ring and prays that his love may only deepen. The Herat school is prized for its measured compositions, luminous architecture and acutely observed figures.
