Shirin Sees the Portrait of Khusraw — from the royal Khamsa of Nizami made for Shah Tahmasp I, Tabriz, 1539–1543.

The romance of Khusraw and Shirin, with the sculptor Farhad as tragic rival, is one of the five great poems of Nizami’s Khamsa.

This painting belongs to the sumptuous copy of the Khamsa (Quintet) of the poet Nizami produced for Shah Tahmasp I between 1539 and 1543. Made at the height of the Tabriz court style, its illustrations are counted among the supreme achievements of Persian painting.
