The Shah's Wise Men Approve of Zal's Marriage — from the celebrated Shahnama (Book of Kings) commissioned by Shah Tahmasp I, painted in Tabriz in the 1520s–1530s.

Zal, the white-haired hero raised by the fabulous Simurgh, is father of Rustam and one of the great figures of the Persian epic.

This folio comes from the most celebrated illustrated manuscript in Persian art — the monumental Shahnama (Book of Kings) of Firdausi created for the Safavid ruler Shah Tahmasp I. Produced in the royal workshops of Tabriz in the second quarter of the sixteenth century, the manuscript brought together the greatest painters of the age, among them Sultan Muhammad, Mir Musavvir and Aqa Mirak. Its pages are renowned for jewel-like colour, gold-flecked skies and compositions that spill beyond their rulings.
