Alam Guman — Royal Elephant Medallion Area Rug

At the heart of an emerald field, the imperial elephant 'Alam Guman strides forward with his mahout, dressed in a red-and-gold caparison.

This rug borrows the central-medallion layout of Shah Jahan-era court textiles and fills it with one of the great animal portraits of his reign. The elephant is re-drawn from the Portrait of the Elephant 'Alam Guman, painted at Shah Jahan's court around 1640 and part of our restored archive. Elephants were among the most prized animals of the Mughal court, and the finest were given names of their own.

Around the ivory medallion, the field stays a calm, saturated emerald with only a whisper of tone-on-tone vines, finished with ivory corner pieces and a crimson border of gold lotus palmettes.
