About the piece Scroll ↓

From an imperial copy of the Baburnama — the memoirs of Babur, founder of the Mughal dynasty — this folio captures the storming of the hill-fort of Qalat. Banners press against the ramparts as cavalry and foot-soldiers clash in the flowering meadow below, the young warrior Kichik Beg falling wounded amid the fray.

Painted in the imperial atelier around 1590, the composition is attributed to the designer Kanha with painting by Mansur, masters of the great Mughal manuscript workshops. Its jewel-bright palette and crowded, energetic staging are hallmarks of the empire's golden age of book illustration.
