Chinar of Kashmir — Autumn Tree of Life Area Rug

A great chinar tree rises from the rocks, its crown ablaze in rust, saffron and caramel, squirrels scampering along its pale branches.

The chinar, or plane tree, is the emblem of Kashmir, the valley the Mughal emperors loved and filled with gardens. This tree-of-life rug is re-drawn from Squirrels in a Plane Tree, attributed to Abu'l Hasan, one of Emperor Jahangir's favorite painters, in the early 17th century. The trunk, the squirrels and the autumn leaves all come from that painting in our restored archive.

The field is a deep chocolate brown, with a caramel border of scrolling leaves and cream guard stripes, an earthy palette that feels warm and current.
