Genda Jaal — Marigold Lattice Mughal Area Rug

Rows of saffron marigolds bloom inside a slender gold trellis, each one settled in its own arched compartment like a flower in a palace window.

Genda Jaal takes its layout from the lattice-and-blossom carpets woven for the court of Shah Jahan around 1650, where a single flowering plant repeats in every cell of a trellis that seems to run on beyond the border. The marigolds themselves are re-drawn from an 18th-century Mughal flower study in our restored archive, attributed to the painter Hunhar. Marigolds reached India through Portuguese trade and soon became the flower of garlands and offerings, which is why they feel so familiar today.

The palette is deliberately soft: faded lilac in the field, dusty madder rose in the border and warm ochre in the lattice, giving the rug the gentle, sun-washed look of a well-loved heirloom.
