Gul-e-Mehrab — Mughal Flower Niche Area Rug

A single flowering plant rises beneath a scalloped Mughal arch, two butterflies drifting toward its magenta blooms.

Gul-e-Mehrab follows the niche-and-flower carpets of Shah Jahan's reign in the 1630s and 40s, when the lone flowering plant became the signature image of the Mughal court, the same motif carved in marble along the walls of the Taj Mahal. The plant and its butterflies are re-drawn from a Mughal flower study of about 1630 in our restored archive, made with the botanical precision Shah Jahan's artists were known for.

An ivory field gives the plant room to breathe, framed by lapis-blue spandrels scattered with gold sprigs and a deep blue border of small flowering plants edged in crimson.
