Hazar Gul — Mughal Millefleurs Area Rug

From a blue-and-white vase, a fountain of a thousand flowers climbs toward a pointed arch: lilies, peonies, bellflowers and marigolds glowing against midnight indigo.

Hazar Gul, "a thousand flowers", is our take on the millefleurs carpets of late Mughal India, where the field fills with countless tiny blossoms under a prayer-niche arch. The vase, the flowers and the curling red scrolls are re-drawn from a Lucknow painting of about 1750–1800 in our restored archive. The overflowing vase is one of the oldest symbols of abundance in Indian art, and the porcelain vase in the painting is the kind made in China for export to Europe.

Saffron spandrels, a crimson vine border and ivory guard stripes frame the bouquet, so the deep indigo field makes every color shine.
