Across the Ravi from Lahore, at Shahdara, the tomb of the emperor Jahangir rises from a walled garden divided into four quarters, a charbagh, with tall octagonal minarets at its corners. It was completed in 1637.

The Mughal Jade dial follows the plan of that garden: four quarters in soft green sunray, gold-toned water channels meeting at an octagonal pool at the centre, and the tomb with its minarets at twelve.
