About the piece Scroll ↓

Worth nine lakh, and named for it.

Inside the Lahore Fort stands a small white-marble pavilion with a curving Bengali roof, once inlaid with precious stones. Built in 1633 under Shah Jahan, it was called the Naulakha, nine lakh, for what it is said to have cost, and in time the word came to mean anything precious.

The Naulakha Ivory dial is soft and opaline, with a fine eight-lobed rose-engine pattern, the pavilion's curved roof at twelve, and a small pietra dura flower at six in carnelian red and lapis blue.

The details

  • Steel-tone alloy case and stainless steel bracelet with butterfly clasp
  • Printed dial; clear crystal with black hour numerals 1 to 12
  • For everyday wear; not for showering, bathing or swimming
  • Arrives in an Aurah canvas pouch with an embossed hang tag and a story card on the history of the Naulakha
