Jahangir's Aviary — Mughal Birds Area Rug

Twelve birds, twelve ivory panels: a hoopoe, a hornbill, a peacock, a kingfisher, a sarus crane and more, each perched on a flowering sprig.

Emperor Jahangir kept a keen naturalist's eye on the birds of his empire, and his painters, above all Ustad Mansur, recorded them with remarkable accuracy. Jahangir's Aviary arranges a dozen birds in the compartment layout of classical carpets, each re-drawn in the spirit of the Mughal bird studies in our restored archive, among them a hoopoe on a citrus branch and Mansur's great hornbill.

A dusty rose border of sage-green vines and coral flowers frames the panels, giving the rug a light, fresh, garden feel.
