Lahore Menagerie — Mughal Animal Carpet Area Rug

Blackbuck, nilgai and long-horned mountain goats meet face to face among date palms and flowering shrubs, on a field of deep madder red.

Lahore Menagerie is drawn from the pictorial animal carpets woven in Lahore around 1600, which scattered animals, trees and birds across a red field in mirrored pairs. Its animals come from the natural-history studies of the Mughal court in our restored archive: the Ladakhi mountain goat painted in Emperor Jahangir's reign, a blackbuck from the Shah Jahan Album and a study of a nilgai. Jahangir recorded rare animals in his memoirs and had his painters portray them with scientific care.

An indigo border of gold cartouches, star medallions and cloud bands, inside slim green guard stripes, completes the classic museum-carpet look.
