About the piece Scroll ↓

A Sufi master sits in quiet contemplation, wrapped in a deep crimson robe, his gaze turned inward. This is Mulla Shah Badakhshi, saint of the Qadiri order and spiritual guide to the Mughal prince Dara Shikoh and his sister, the princess Jahanara.

Such meditative portraits were commissioned in the 1640s as aids to devotion — a face to hold before the eye while contemplating the divine. Rendered in delicate Mughal line around 1639, the likeness pairs the restraint of a holy man's portrait with the refinement of the imperial workshop.
