About the piece Scroll ↓

A nobleman in a white robe and red turban, sword at his side, a shield in his left hand — Qilich Khan Turani, governor of Qandahar Fort. The inscription on the inner border, in Shah Jahan's own hand, reads: "a portrait of Qilich Khan, governor of Qandahar Fort, done by La'lchand."

Painted by La'lchand, ca. 1640 (recto); ca. 1530-50 (verso). The folio reflects the disciplined elegance of Mughal court portraiture — calligraphic gold inner frame, broad floral border, every detail attended to in the courtly mode.

The folio belongs to the Shah Jahan Album, the most ambitious imperial album ever assembled by the Mughal court — commissioned to honour the painters and calligraphers of his father Jahangir's atelier.
