About the piece Scroll ↓

Beneath a flowered canopy, Allami Sa'dullah Khan — Grand Vizier to the Emperor Shah Jahan — receives his court in solemn audience. Ranks of nobles in jewel-toned robes stand in attendance while a falconer, an elephant and a kneeling petitioner gather at the rail, every figure observed with the cool precision of the Shah Jahan period.

Sa'dullah Khan (c.1591–1656) was reckoned among the most accomplished statesmen of his age — the steady hand behind Shah Jahan's administration in the very years the Taj Mahal rose at Agra. The painting dates to about 1655, near the close of his service.
