The Emperor Shah Jahan Standing on a Globe | Restored Mughal Wall Art

The emperor Shah Jahan stands upon a globe where a lion and a lamb rest side by side — the oldest dream of just rule, painted at his feet. Winged angels descend with the imperial crown, ranks of soldiers fade into the green ground behind his golden halo, and the radiant standard beside him traces his lineage back to Timur. An allegorical portrait of the self-styled King of the World, inscribed to the court painter Hashim and dated by its inscription to 1038 AH (1628–29), the opening years of his reign.
