Waq-Waq — Mughal Animal Scroll Area Rug

Look closely: the curling vines are sprouting elephants, lions, goats and birds, a whole menagerie growing on the stem.

Waq-Waq is inspired by a playful Mughal painting from the early 1600s in our restored archive, in which a magical plant brings forth animals of every kind. Learned viewers at court would have recognized it from old Persian tales of Waq-waq, an island of half-plant, half-animal creatures. Rare Mughal carpets of the same period played the same game, with animal heads emerging from their scrolls.

The mirrored vines grow across a warm sand field, framed by a teal border of gold cartouches holding small birds, with madder-red and ivory guard stripes.
