About the piece Scroll ↓

Emperor Akbar with a haloed sun crown, holding prayer beads and a sword — a lion seated peaceably at his left foot, a white calf curled at his right. In the sky above, putti angels bear a celestial crown amid drifting clouds. The composition is one of the great allegorical Mughal portraits: the emperor as wise, just, and so powerful that even predators and prey rest at peace in his presence.

Painted by Govardhan, ca. 1630, one of the leading court painters under Jahangir and Shah Jahan, celebrated for the gravity and gentleness of his figures. The folio belongs to the Shah Jahan Album, the most ambitious imperial album ever assembled by the Mughal court — commissioned to honour the painters and calligraphers of his father Jahangir's atelier.
