A dramatic portrait of the emperor Aurangzeb by the painter Hunhar, from the St. Petersburg Album: the haloed monarch stands in his austere white robes within an architectural niche, a brilliant shaft of light falling diagonally across the picture plane — a striking late-Mughal use of European-influenced chiaroscuro to glorify the emperor's piety.

An early-eighteenth-century Mughal album portrait. Restored from the museum archives by Aurah Living.
