The emperor Jahangir, the great Mughal connoisseur of European art, stands haloed and contemplating a small painting of the Madonna — a Christian devotional subject he prized as a collector's object. The portrait fuses Mughal courtly portraiture with the European Christian iconography brought to court by Jesuit missionaries, and is among the most striking images of Mughal cosmopolitanism.

An early-seventeenth-century Mughal album portrait. Restored from the museum archives by Aurah Living.
