About the piece Scroll ↓

Nobleman in Shah Jahan's service, became ambassador to Iran in the 1640s.

Painted by Balchand, ca. 1627 (verso), with calligraphy attributed to Mir 'Ali Heravi. The artist has revealed, both in the features and the position of the hands, a serious and restrained personality. Inscribed in Shah Jahan's own hand: "shabih-i Jansipar Khan, 'amal-i Balchand" — a portrait of Jansipar Khan, done by Balchand.

The folio belongs to the Shah Jahan Album, the most ambitious imperial album ever assembled by the Mughal court — commissioned to honour the painters and calligraphers of his father Jahangir's atelier.
