About the piece Scroll ↓

A portrait of Khan Dauran Bahadur Nusrat Jang, viceroy of the Deccan and one of Shah Jahan's leading soldiers. By his death in 1645, he had been promoted to the highest imperial rank ever held by a person of nonroyal blood. Inscribed in Shah Jahan's own hand: "shabih-i Khan-Dauran Bahadur Nusrat-Jang, 'amal-i Murad" — a portrait of Khan-Dauran Bahadur Nusrat-Jang, done by Murad. For distinguished service during the conquest of Daulatabad, he received the title "Khan Dauran."

Painted by Murad, ca. 1640 (recto); ca. 1530-50 (verso).

The folio belongs to the Shah Jahan Album, the most ambitious imperial album ever assembled by the Mughal court — commissioned to honour the painters and calligraphers of his father Jahangir's atelier.
