About the piece Scroll ↓

A Hindu Rajput nobleman in profile — Maharaja Bhim Kanwar, son of Rana Amar Singh of Mewar, given the title maharaja by Shah Jahan, a staunch ally of the Mughal house. He fought beside the emperor in battle and stands here among flowers that seem to sway in the wind.

Painted by Nanha, ca. 1615-29 (verso); ca. 1540 (recto), with calligraphy by Mir 'Ali Heravi. As demonstrated by the inclusion of his portrait in the Shah Jahan Album, Hindu nobility featured prominently in the ranks of the Mughal empire.

The folio belongs to the Shah Jahan Album, the most ambitious imperial album ever assembled by the Mughal court — commissioned to honour the painters and calligraphers of his father Jahangir's atelier.
