About the piece Scroll ↓

Ambassador sent by Shah Safi of Iran to the court of Shah Jahan in 1631.

Painted by Hashim, ca. 1631, and inscribed: "portrait of Muhammad 'Ali Beg, the ambassador, by Hashim". The strong contours and palette betray Hashim's Deccani origins; the rendering of the features is thoroughly Mughal — the alloy of regional traditions that the imperial atelier perfected under Jahangir and Shah Jahan.

The folio belongs to the Shah Jahan Album, the most ambitious imperial album ever assembled by the Mughal court — commissioned to honour the painters and calligraphers of his father Jahangir's atelier.
