Princess Jahanara at Eighteen

The young Jahanara Begum, aged eighteen, stands in white against a dark ground — eldest daughter of Shah Jahan and, in time, the most powerful woman at the Mughal court. She held the title Padshah Begum, ran the imperial household after her mother's death, endowed mosques and caravanserais, and designed the great bazaar at Chandni Chowk.

The portrait belongs to an imperial album assembled in the early 1630s, when the Mughal studio was at the height of its powers — the figure set flat against darkness, the white robe drawn in the finest of line, ornament held to a whisper.
