The Vizier Pleads for the Robber's Son by Basawan, Gulistan Manuscript 1596 – Restored Mughal Wall Art

Painted by the master Basawan in Lahore circa 1596, this folio from an illustrated manuscript of Sa'di's Gulistan (Rose Garden) depicts a pivotal moral tale from the beloved Persian classic. In the upper register, a monarch sits enthroned beneath festive banners, surrounded by courtiers in rich robes of saffron, emerald, and gold. Below, captured robbers are brought before the court—bound, desperate, some partly unclothed—while a compassionate vizier pleads for the life of a young boy, son of one of the bandits. Basawan's luminous palette and theatrical composition, influenced by European techniques he studied at Emperor Akbar's court, captures the tension between justice and mercy.

The tale ends in tragedy. The king reluctantly spares the boy, but the vizier's faith in nurture over nature proves fatally misplaced: years later, the youth betrays his benefactor, murdering the vizier and his son to reclaim his father's criminal legacy. Sa'di's cautionary verse, composed in 1258, was endlessly quoted at the Mughal court. This manuscript, completed in its colophon year of 1596, was later dispersed—a fragment of Akbar-era courtly refinement, now scattered across continents. Basawan, celebrated by the emperor's chronicler as 'unrivalled in the world,' disappeared from records around 1600, his fate unknown.
