About the piece Scroll ↓

A standing portrait of Jadun Rai Deccani, a nobleman in white robe with gold sash, set against the gilded floral border of a Mughal album folio. The composition follows the disciplined, almost still-quiet vocabulary of the Shah Jahan-era portrait tradition.

Painted by Hashim, the Deccani painter who joined the Mughal imperial atelier ca. 1620 and quickly became one of its most refined portraitists. Hashim's strong contours and rich palette reveal his Bijapur origins; the rendering of the features shows the change made under Jahangir's guidance.

The folio belongs to the Shah Jahan Album, the most ambitious imperial album ever assembled by the Mughal court — commissioned to honour the painters and calligraphers of his father Jahangir's atelier.
